This week I'm bringing you a grab-bag of new and nostalgic-sounds for the New Music: Friday Release Edits playlist. I’m highlighting some exciting recent releases from a variety of artists and genres. Dive into the latest tracks and rediscover a few wonderful reissued gems:
The Softies bring us some heartfelt music love with their song, “Headphones,” (Plug your headphones / Straight into my heart / Listen / Listen / I love you) from their first new album in over twenty-four years with the duo's new album, The Bed I Made, plus, we highlight a few nostalgic cuts from Winter Pageant and It’s Love which have also been reissued recently by K. See them live on October 3rd at PhilaMOCA next month. Drop Nineteens revisit their classic album Delaware with a reissue on daffodil yellow vinyl (they also have a single called '19' (a play on '19' and '1991,' available now digitally) and we've highlighted the tracks, “Delaware” and “Winona” from their Delaware album for our mix.
Mint Field are one of our favorite dream-pop and shoegaze artists out there right now to emerge from Spain and absolutely enchant with their new extended EP tracks, “El mar me vela” and “Sensibilidad dormida” from Aprender a Ser: Extended. The band will play Kung Fu Necktie with Public Memory on October 10th. In the same vein, Chrystabell and David Lynch create an atmospheric experience together with their songs “The Answers to The Questions” and “Sublime Eternal Love” from their recent release of Cellophane Memories (also featuring synths from composer Angelo Badalamenti who passed away in 2022).
BASIC introduces us to their unique sound with “For Stars of the Air” and “New Auspicious” from This Is BASIC. If you're at all familiar or friends with local musician Chris Forsyth (The Solar Motel Band) you already know that this is his hotly anticipated full-length from his project with musician Nick Millevoi, and Mikel Patrick Avery, of Natural Information Society. The trio's release, This is BASIC, has been released on exceptional local Philly label, No Quarter. The band just announced a show on Saturday, December 7th at Johnny Brenda's.
MJ Lenderman (Wednesday, Waxahatchee) delivers raw emotion in “Joker Lips”, “She’s Leaving You”, and “Bark At The Moon” from his latest solo release, Manning Fireworks (out now on Dear Life and ANTI-). Lenderman tours this fall with Ryan Davis & the Roadhouse Band and will be at Union Transfer on October 24th.
Toro y Moi collaborates with Benjamin Gibbard (Death Cab for Cutie, Postal Service) on “Hollywood” and rapper Don Tolliver on “Madonna” from Hole Erth. This is Chaz Bear's second release following up 2022's Mahal on the Dead Oceans label. Purveyors of early '90s nostalgic sounds, the duo Callahan & Witscher, team up with Ana Roxanne for their end-of-summer lo-fi sounds on track, “Hate the Player” from new album, Think Differently.
Los Angeles-based group, Dummy, energizes with “Psychic Battery”, “Sudden Flutes”, and “Nine Clean Nails” from their brilliant new Trouble In Mind release, Free Energy. Wishy captivates with “Triple Seven”, “Game”, and “Honey” from Triple Seven. Little Hag (based in Central NJ) brings a punch with “You Blew It!” and “Suck Out the Pain” from Now That’s What I Call Little Hag (Bar/None Records). Geneva Jacuzzi intrigues with “Dry” and “Bow Tie Eater” from Triple Fire. Say She She charms with “I Believe in Miracles” and “C’est Si Bon” from their 7" Single on Colemine. I'm now sold out of their single(s) (black and purple swirl, but hope to get a few more in stock).
