"Heavy Electric" Coloring Book Zine (Guitars 1979-1989) by Rebecca V.-Flores
Details: This is an amazingly rendered guitar-love fanzine from artist and musician Rebecca Valeriano-Flores of the Chicago-based band Negative Scanner on Trouble In Mind Records. Rebecca plays guitar and sings lead vocals in Negative Scanner, and so it is fitting that she also loves to look at and thinks a whole lot about heavy electric guitars! It took her a long time to get these guitars down, and their accompanying images and researched facts, to go along with them. Rebecca is also now working on a secondary (follow-up) edition! C'mon and get it! Hours of awesome music-related therapeutic and heavy-guitar coloring fun!
Short Description: From artist and musician Rebecca Valeriano-Flores of band Negative Scanner: "HEAVY ELECTRIC: Guitars 1979-1989! A 19-page (5.5 x 8.5") fanzine and coloring book of my favorite "metal" style guitars from the '80s."
Full Description: A note from Rebecca about the fanzine: "Dear Reader, I hope you enjoy this fanzine! I love guitars. Using a light table, I lovingly hand-traced each and every string, fret, and bolt (though my tracing work certainly isn't perfect and not meant to be). I found a guitar encyclopedia at a library years and years ago and decided to trace a few that I lived to make a coloring book--I ended up tracing dozens and I'm still tracing more.
For this first issue, I wanted to start out with guitars with fun shapes and patterns: it was pretty clever to me that "metal" guitars from the '80s would be the way to go. This isn't meant to be an exhaustive catalog of metal guitars and I'm probably leaving out a few famous ones, but, I chose these because I like them or found them unique. My favorite guitar here is the Charvel 1989 Spectrum. I've also included a few neat vintage advertisements and some tidbits of info sourced from an encyclopedia, vintage catalogs and ads, the Blue Book of Guitar Values, and fansites."
About Negative Scanner: "Negative Scanner are a Chicago post-punk quartet formed in 2012 by Rebecca Valeriano-Flores (guitar, vocals), Tom Cassling (drums), Matt Revers (guitar), & Nick Beaudoin (bass) in the wake of the breakup of Flores & Cassling's previous band 'Tyler Jon Tyler'. A fierce live unit, they honed their chops on Chicago's robust DIY scene, propelled by the rhythm section's dialed-in hive-mind & the twin guitar attack of Revers & Flores, whose powerful voice delivers her lyrics with passion & conviction. The band's previous s/t album was released by Trouble In Mind in 2015. Nose Picker is their second album, released on July 20th, 2018."
